2つの夢、2つの笑顔、そして1つの目標
今回の選挙（※注1）に関して、多くのメッセージや電話をいただいております。私は選挙についてのアドバイスはいたしませんが、ITTFの将来について尋ねられた際には、自分の意見を述べています。あまりにも多くのご要望があるため、個別に返答を続ける代わりに、興味のある方々に向けてこの「意見表明」をお届けします。ご興味のない方は、このメッセージを削除してください。

2つの夢
ITTFの第3代会長である日本の荻村伊智朗氏は、ビジョンを持った先駆者でした。彼は、伝統的な旧体質の組織だったITTFを、前進する現代的な連盟へと変革しました。
私は荻村氏と何度もお会いし、国際卓球について語り合う機会がありました。中でも最も印象に残っているのは、彼が1987年に会長に選出された直後のことでした。私は彼に、ITTFと卓球の国際的発展に関する計画を尋ねました。彼の答えは簡潔で明快でした。
「私は2つの夢を持っている」と彼は強調しました。「第一に、卓球をオリンピック競技にすること。これはすでに達成された。第二に、ITTF会長がIOC委員になること。これは非常に困難だが、全力を尽くす。」
彼は、ITTFがオリンピック参加を目指すには遅すぎたと説明しました。当時のITTF第2代会長ロイ・エバンス氏は、重圧の中で副会長だった荻村氏にこの任務を託しました。非常に困難な任務でしたが、荻村氏は粘り強く取り組み、1988年のソウル大会で卓球を公式競技として採用させました（通常の「公開競技」の段階を飛び越えて）。これは驚異的な成果です。

彼の第二の夢、すなわちIOC委員になることは、夢のまま終わりました。荻村氏は会長として7年務めた後、1994年に亡くなりました。その間にITTFを近代的かつ進歩的な連盟へと変革し、その基盤を築きました。第4代（徐寅生）、第5代（ハンマールンド）、第6代（シャララ）、第7代（ヴァイカート）と続く会長たちも、荻村氏のこの夢は実現できませんでした。
IOCでは国際競技連盟（IF）の会長がIOC委員になる枠が15名分だけ用意されています。これはIOC委員全体の15％未満という非常に狭き門です。また、IOCはジェンダー平等の方針を採っており、IF会長が女性である場合にその枠が優先されます。現在、オリンピック競技の女性会長は2名しかおらず、その2名はいずれもIOC委員です。その1人が現ITTF会長です。
つまり、2021年ヒューストンでのITTF選挙の直後に、荻村氏の第二の夢も実現されたのです。
私が「なぜITTF会長がIOC委員であることが重要なのか」と質問したとき、荻村氏は私の幼稚な質問に笑いました。そしてこう説明しました。「IOC委員になれば、IOC会長と個別に会う機会が得られ、卓球をPRしたり、我々の要望を伝えることができる。IOCの各種委員会にも参加できるのだ。」その通りでした。荻村氏は真のビジョナリーであり、スポーツ外交とIOC委員の特別な地位の重要性を理解していたのです。
2つの笑顔
最近IOCでは初の女性会長であるMs. Xxxxが就任しました。その直後、現ITTF会長（こちらも初の女性会長）が、次のオリンピックで卓球の新種目が追加されたと発表しました。何という快挙でしょうか。これが「2つの笑顔」です。
この新種目は、2021年にスウェーデン卓球協会が発案し、現ITTF会長が推進してきた「男女混合チーム」戦で、男女が同じチームとして共に戦う非常に革新的な形式です。このイベントは2023年・2024年の成功を経て、今や正式なオリンピック競技となりました。
この成果のインパクトを私たちは「しっかりと認識すべき」です。もし荻村氏が今も存命であれば、バッハ会長に「ITTF会長にオリンピックリングを10個授与せよ！」と言っていたでしょう。多くの競技が長年オリンピック入りを目指して戦っている中で、卓球は短期間で新種目の追加に成功しました。やはり荻村氏は正しかったのです。
1つの目標
選挙に関してよく聞かれるのは、「誰に投票すればいいか？」という質問です。私の答えは常に同じです――「誰か」ではなく「何を」選ぶかです。
まず私は、誰かに対して投票の指示をすることはありません。ただし、私の考えとして、私たちは「誰に」投票するかよりも、「ITTFのために何を望むか」をまず考えるべきです。
「ITTFにとって最も望ましい状況とは何か」を自問した上で、「誰に」投票すべきかを判断する。それが正しい順序だと思います。
私の意見では、ITTFは荻村氏の「2つの夢」に従うべきです。リーダーシップと職員は、卓球をオリンピックにおけるトップ競技の一つにすることを目指すべきです。新種目の追加は、すでに大きな一歩です。
そして、私の意見では、ITTF会長がIOC委員という地位を獲得している現在、この成果を危険にさらすべきではありません。それは全く理にかなっていません。
ITTF会長選の候補者たちは、まず第一に「ITTFがこれから4年間でどうあるべきか」を考えるべきです。あるいは、現状を壊さず、IOC委員としての利点を守るために、候補者同士で合意を見つけるのも洗練された、利他的な道ではないでしょうか。「ITTFの未来にとって何が最良か」を第一に考えるべきです。個人的な野心よりも。
副会長選についても、候補者からのビジョンや優先事項を受け取りました。各代表は、自身のITTFに対するビジョンに最も近い候補者を選ぶべきです。
私はまた、以下のような伝統も重視したいと思います：
アフリカ・アジア・ヨーロッパ・ラテンアメリカ・北アメリカ・オセアニアの各地域から1名ずつ副会長を選出し、さらに2名は世界中のどこからでも。これはルールではありませんが、ITTFの民主的な伝統であり、世界中の関与を保証するためのものです。

Two Dreams, Two Smiles, and One Objective.
I have received many messages and calls regarding the upcoming elections. I do not give advice
about the election, but I do give my opinion regarding the ITTF’s future to those who ask me. As
the number of requests is high, instead of continuing to respond individually, I am providing this
“Statement of Opinion” for all those who are interested. If you are not interested, just delete this
message.
If you are still reading, here goes:
TWO DREAMS
The ITTF’s 3rd President, Ichiro Ogimura of Japan, was a visionary and a trailblazer. He converted
the ITTF from a traditional old-school organisation to a forward-moving modernized federation.
I had the privilege to meet and discuss international table tennis with Mr. Ogimura on many
occasions. However, the most memorable was after his election as president in 1987. I asked him
what were his plans for the ITTF and for our sport internationally. His response was brief and to
the point:
“I have two dreams” he emphasized. “First, for Table Tennis to become an Olympic Sport. This is
now achieved. Second, for the ITTF President to be an IOC member. This is very difficult, but I
will do my best”.
He explained that the ITTF was very late in attempting to join the Olympic Games. The 2nd
president of the ITTF, Roy Evans, finally accepted, under pressure, to assign the responsibility of
becoming an Olympic Sport to his then Deputy, Ichiro Ogimura. This was a very difficult task.
However, Mr. Ogimura was persistent and was eventually successful to get TT into the Olympic
program as an official sport in 1988 (Seoul), bypassing the usual “demonstration sport” step. This
was a remarkable achievement. In 1987 Ogimura was elected president based on his universal
message to develop TT as an Olympic Sport around the globe. In 1988, at the Seoul Olympics,
Ogimura asked IOC presiden,t Juan Antonio Samaranch, to award Roy Evans with the Olympic
Rings because TT was selected as an Olympic Sport during Roy Evan’s term as president. This
was a “classy” gesture, and exemplified Ogimura’s character of puting the ITTF first above his
personal interests. Ogimura knew, what we now take for granted, that if TT were not an Olympic
Sport, it would be left behind in the international sports arena as far as importance, visibility and
popularity.
As for his second dream, becoming an IOC member, it remained a dream. Ogimura passed away
in 1994 after 7 years as ITTF President, in which he transformed the Federation and lay the
foundation for a modern and progressive ITTF. The 4th President (Xu), 5th (Hammerlund), 6th
(Sharara) and 7th (Weikert), all did not realize Ogimura’s dream. The IOC has a quota of 15 places
for IF Presidents to be named IOC members. This is a very limited number (less than 15% of the
total IOC members). The IOC tries its best to implement a gender equality policy. So, it reserves
some vacant spots in this quota in hope of having female IF Presidents elected to fill the spots.
Currently, there are only 2 IF women presidents of Olympic sports, and they are both IOC
members. One of them is the current ITTF President. Ichiro Ogimura’s second dream was
realized shortly after the 2021 ITTF elections in Houston.
When I asked Mr. Ogimura, why was it important for the ITTF president to be an IOC member, he
laughed at my naive question. He explained that as an IOC member the IF president can often
meet with the IOC President one-on-one and promote our sport and convince the IOC of the IF’s
needs and requirements. IOC members are also appointed to IOC committees. Was he right?
Definitely! Ogimura was a visionary, and he understood sports’ diplomacy and the special status
of IOC members.
TWO SMILES
Very recently, the IOC elected a new president, Ms. Xxxx, the first woman president in the history
of the IOC. Shortly after, just a few weeks ago, our ITTF President (also the first woman ITTF
president) announced that the IOC has added a new Table Tennis event to the program of the
next Olympic Games. What? That is incredible news and boosts the importance of our sport within
the Olympic program. TWO SMILES, yes.
This is an initiative started in 2021 by the Swedish TT Association and championed by our ITTF
president. A “mixed team” with men and women representing the same team, side by side, in a
very innovative format. We witnessed the success of this event in 2023 and 2024. It is now an
OLYMPIC EVENT. Let’s all “wake up” and realize the full impact of such an achievement. Ogimura
would have asked Thomas Bach to award our ITTF President 10 Olympic rings! Some sports are
fighting for a very long time to get into the Olympic Games, others are fighting to get more events,
but Table Tennis has achieved it in a very short time. Yes, Ogimura was right.
ONE OBJECTIVE
One of the questions I am asked, is “WHO should I vote for at these elections”. My answer is the
same to everyone “It is not WHO, it is WHAT”. First, I do not tell anyone how to vote. Second, in
my opinion we should think more about “what” we want for the ITTF, and not for “who” we vote.
Once a delegate answers the question of “what” situation is best for the ITTF, then the delegate
can decide for “who” they should vote.
In my opinion, the ITTF should follow Ogimura’s double dream. The ITTF leadership and staff
should focus on making table tennis one of the top Olympic Sports. Adding an event is already a
great step towards giving more importance to table tennis in the Olympic program.
Also, in my opinion, having achieved the status of IOC member for our ITTF president, why
do we want to jeopardize such an achievement? It does not make any sense to me.
In my opinion, the candidates for the ITTF presidency should think first and foremost “what” is the
situation in which the ITTF should find itself in the next 4 years. Perhaps, an elegant and unselfish
way would be to find an agreement between the candidates that does not jeopardise the status
quo and affect the huge benefit of having a President as an IOC member. It is best to aim at “what”
is best for the ITTF and its future rather than focusing on personal ambitions.
Regarding the election for Vice Presidents, we all received from the candidates their vision and
their priorities. In my opinion, each delegate should choose the candidate who reflects the closest
the delegate’s own vision for the ITTF and its future. I also advocate respecting the tradition of
having at least one VP from each region world-wide (1-Africa, 1-Asia, 1-Europe, 1-Latin America,
1-North America, 1-Oceania), plus 2 VPs from anywhere in the World. This is not a rule, but a
democratic ITTF tradition to guarantee involvement from all over the World in the decision-making
process.
Finally, I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Thomas Bach, outgoing IOC President, for his support
to table tennis as an Olympic sport.
I also take this opportunity to congratulate France for its “double” semi-finals in men’s “doubles”
in Doha. Although this is not surprising, it is very impressive.
